OTTAWA—Canadian lawmakers canceled Friday’s sitting of parliament on the advice of security officials, in anticipation that police in the capital will continue their efforts to remove protesters parked in front of the legislature for the past 22 days.
Lawmakers were scheduled to debate Friday and through the weekend the Liberal government’s decision to invoke rarely used emergency measures, with a vote slated for Monday night. The emergency powers allow authorities to designate certain areas—including the streets around Parliament Hill—as no-protest zones where people could be subject to arrest.
