RACINE – Applications are now being accepted for Federal funds that will supply emergency food and shelter through nonprofit organizations. Funds will be allocated to eligible nonprofit agencies in Racine County to supplement these emergency programs within the county.

“We have received funding for emergency food and shelter for many years,” said Jonathan Delagrave, who made the announcement on Wednesday. “These funds assist families and individuals who need to fulfill basic needs for themselves and their families and did not have the resources at the time or had faced an unexpected crisis.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFS) has provided funds annually to Racine County since 1983. FEMA has awarded Racine County $282,304 for the purpose of helping individuals and families who are in need of food and shelter.

A local board reviews applications from area nonprofits and allocates funding to those who qualify. The board is made up of representatives from:

  • Racine County Executive’s office
  • City of Racine
  • American Red Cross
  • The Salvation Army
  • Racine Kenosha Community Action Agency
  • National Council of Churches
  • United Way of Racine County
  • Catholic Charities
  • AFL-CIO Central Labor Council
  • Racine County Food Bank
  • A previous recipient of these emergency services

Who is Eligible for Federal Funds?

Local organizations who meet these criteria are eligible to receive funding and are urged to apply:

  • Be non-profit
  • Have an accounting system
  • Conduct an annual audit
  • Practice nondiscrimination
  • Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs
  • Have a voluntary board
  • Must not be barred from receiving federal funds

Application Deadline

The applications for these federal funds are due no later than 4:30 p.m. on March 11, with absolutely no exceptions to the deadline, and can be sent to the following:
