It’s been a long winter season that has seemingly gone by in an instant.
We’ve seen some excellent achievements and it’s been fun chronicling the journey though our Team of the Week polls. We’ve seen state champions win the honor and the $100 prize and we’ve seen .500 teams scratch and claw for an upset that shocked the area.
We are blessed to live in an area that is so rich in high school athletic tradition and talent.
So with no further ado, and with another thanks for the sponsor that’s been powering this all season long Rock Valley College, here are our final two teams alive this season that will vie for our final Winter Team of the Week.
- Scales Mound Boys Basketball – The Hornets took out Sterling Newman Central Catholic in the Sectional final Friday night 62-49 to advance to the Super-Sectional game against Chicago Marshall in Dekalb tonight. One more win and they will travel down to Champaign for the Final Four that begins on Thursday. The 70 student school is considered small, even for class 1A. There’s a real Hoosiers vibe emanating from Scales Mound.
- Lutheran Boys Basketball – The Crusaders were down for most of the game against their cross-town rivals Rockford Christian Friday night in Marengo for a boys 2A Sectional Final. Rockford Lutheran kicked it into another gear during the 4th quarter to secure their spot in the final 8. They match up against Taylor Ridge Rockridge tonight in Sterling for their chance to advance to the Final Four in Champaign this Thursday.
The winning team will be named the Team of the Week, win a $100 Visa gift card courtesy of Rock Valley College and be entered into the Team of the Winter Season poll that will pay $500 to the team that wins.
