Concerned about speeding motorists, loud exhaust noise
Racine Street in Jefferson has become a race track and a place for people with loud exhaust pipes to show off.
About 3:15 every day, drivers in trucks and cars come past my house and stomp on the gas to produce a loud cracking noise with their exhaust pipes. When I am playing piano, the noise startles me and disrupts my practice.
I have phoned police and get the answer that I have to stand outside and read their license plate numbers because they can’t do anything without it. Why are we paying police salaries when they aren’t willing or capable of enforcing existing traffic laws?
I contacted the mayor’s office. He couldn’t be bothered to talk with me, so a secretary called me back and said she would let the police know. I also contacted a city alderperson who also did not return my call.
If the police won’t enforce the speed limit in town, perhaps we should request stop and go lights on Racine Street at every cross street between the bypass and the bridge to slow down the traffic.
Citizens, if you are concerned about pedestrians being hit by a speeding car, call your mayor’s office and express your opinion.
Sincerely,
Claire Thorpe,
Jefferson
